2050 VLSB - UC Berkeley

Divided We Fall is an intriguing film that captures the experiences of Valarie Kaur, who traveled around the United States capturing the hate and violence that the Sikh and Muslim communities dealt with in the immediate aftermath of 9/11. Valarie speaks with several victims of hate crimes and provides the viewers with an understanding of the difficulties Americans had to face due to their unique religious identities. In the film, Valerie explores the issues of race and religion in the context of "being an American" and illustrates how a distinction was established in the U.S. between Americans and the "others".

In  Fall of 2008, UC Berkeley Sikh Student Association screened Divided We Fall. After the screening, Berkeley students shared their own experiences in relation to the difficulties they faced since 9/11. Also, Kavneet Singh Alag, director of Sikh American Legal Defense and Education Fund (SALDEF) and UC Berkeley alumni, answered questions and provided details on some of the issues that were mentioned in the film.
