October 20th, 2008 170 Barrows
In honor of 300 year Gurgaddi Divas, UC Berkeley's Sikh Students Association held a potluck. Each dish was cooked by an SSA councilmember and included lasagna, mahaa di daal, choley, gobhi di sabjhi, (check the spellings on daal and sabjhi please), brownies, naan, chawl. It was an informal atmosphere intended to encourage students to socialize and bond. It is one of the goals of Berkeley's SSA to provide a safe space for all Sikh students at UC Berkeley, and this goal extends to the Sikh community in all areas. This potluck was modeled after the Sikh concept of Langar, or free kitchen, started by the first Sikh Guru, Sri Guru Nanak Dev Ji. It is designed to uphold the principle of equality between all people of the world regardless of religion, caste, colour, creed, age, gender or social status. In addition to the ideals of equality, the tradition of Langar expresses the ethics of sharing, community, inclusiveness and oneness of all humankind. "..the Light of God is in all hearts."
ਲੰਗਰਿ ਦਉਲਤਿ ਵੰਡੀਐ ਰਸੁ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤੁ ਖੀਰਿ ਘਿਆਲੀ ॥ She [Mata Khivi] distributes the bounty of the Guru's Langar; the kheer - the rice pudding and ghee, is like sweet ambrosia.
